Yes, trauma is like poison that can have an immediate OR delayed impact on your mind, emotions and your physical health. Forgiveness is not an act of betrayal upon yourself. To forgive someone or a circumstance you may feel like you are allowing yourself to be fooled, maybe it feels as though you have given in to the hurt caused by the other person, or maybe forgiving someone makes you feel as though you lost.
